The Patient Journey in Hearing Care: A Comprehensive Guide

Think about all the sounds that you hear in a day. From your alarm clock beeping to your coffee maker whirring, the car horn honking, and the office door creaking, you hear sound from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep.

Our hearing is one of the senses that we cannot “turn off,” and so it’s important to make sure your hearing is working to the best of its abilities. Your ears not only hear the world around you, but also keep you connected with loved ones and maintain safety when you’re out and about.

Hearing care is often mistakenly associated primarily with the elderly, but the truth is that hearing health is crucial for individuals of all ages. Understanding your patient journey in hearing care can help demystify the process and encourage people to seek the help they may need.

Initial Concerns: Research and Booking an Appointment

Congratulations—if you’re here, you’ve already gotten the first three steps squared away!

You noticed a hearing concern, whether that be difficulty conversing in noisy environments or experiencing persistent tinnitus. After some research for “auditory training near me” or “the best audiologists in your area,” you found us.

Now it’s time to book an appointment with us to address your hearing health concerns. Our team is here to help you hear the life you love, no matter what you need, with personalized hearing healthcare.

The First Steps: Discussion and Discovery

After you fill out your paperwork online in our secure database, you’ll have a 30-minute face-to-face consultation with your audiologist.

This intake appointment is dedicated to discussing your unique challenges and circumstances affecting your hearing. It is crucial for you to provide detailed information, as it helps your audiologist tailor your diagnostic process to your specific needs.

Following the initial consultation, we’ll send you a link to the educational online seminar ahead of your first appointment with us, where you’ll learn more about what will happen during the appointment itself and find out about the intricacies of your hearing.

The next stage involves diagnostic testing. Various assessments, including pure-tone audiometry and speech recognition tests, will be conducted to determine the extent and nature of your hearing loss challenges. These tests are essential for developing a personalized treatment plan.

Once diagnostic tests are complete, the audiologist will review your results with you and recommend a personalized treatment plan; your plan could include hearing aids, auditory training, sound therapy, or other interventions tailored to your specific needs and lifestyle preferences.

As one of only a handful of clinics in Illinois that offer it, we’ll often recommend auditory training and aural rehabilitation to help you address your hearing struggles.

In that case, you’ll work to retrain your brain through various sound therapy training sessions, helping you re-understand how certain sounds are heard and enhancing your listening capabilities, not just your hearing.

Advanced Technology to Address Your Hearing Challenges

Your treatment plan will be developed with your specific diagnosis and preferences in mind, and we’ll use demo technology to help you understand how your hearing aids, if recommended, will work for your needs.

We’ll then fit your devices for your requirements, from adjusting the fit to be more snug on (or in) your ears to fixing up programming for your unique hearing profile, as well as teaching you how to use and care for them properly.

After receiving your personalized hearing aids or starting your treatment plan, regular follow-up appointments are crucial to allow your audiologist to adjust your devices based on your real-time experience and feedback.

During follow-up visits, your audiologist will evaluate your performance with hearing aids or other treatments. Continued monitoring ensures that the approach remains effective, as your hearing needs may change over time.

Ongoing Support: A Lifelong Journey

Ongoing support from your audiologist is vital to maintaining your best hearing health and quality of life. This could involve revisiting the clinic for re-evaluations or adjustments whenever necessary.

We will invite you back to our clinic for a 90-day performance evaluation to ensure your devices are working at their best for your needs, as well as recommend annual hearing tests to monitor changes to your hearing.
